Husband is going to be a marine

Posted By: Stephanie Guzman 06-29-12

Hello,

My husband has been thinking about joining the Marines. I think it is a very honorable choice and I'm so proud of him but I'm so so so terrified. I have separation anxiety and also I am so scared that I will lose him to death. I don't want to hold him back and I'm supporting him 100% but I always have this fear that one day I will get a knock on my door informing me he was KIA. The whole process also scares me. I don't know what is going to happen after boot camp or when I will be able to see him. I also want to know how long we will be apart and mainly what is the difference between reserve and active?

I'm sorry for the rant my mind is just everywhere right now. I can't function because of this. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Maybe you should go with him to talk to his recruiter and get info about the steps involved. Also check out MarineFamilyNetwork.com which has lots of information about what happens after boot camp and possible jobs (MOS) he might qualify for depending on his ASVAB scores. I don't know what part of the country you are in, but the Marine Corp Recruit Depots (MCRD) have pages on Facebook (either San Diego if he is in the West or Parris Island for East of the Mississippi). They post pictures weekly of recruits in various stages of training. My daughter just graduated this weekend from Parris Island MCRD and the changes in her are amazing. She has a confidence and a resolve to serve and we all feel a new swelling of pride and patriotism (we were not a military family before this). The Marine Corps trains them well and they are prepared for all kinds of scenarios. After three months of boot camp there's Combat training for a month (Infantry is longer and then possibly deployment from there). If he is not in the Infantry then he'll have 3 to possibly 9 months for his job training (MOS). So he'll be gone a lot for this training, but (non-infantry) deployment is probably at least a year away if not more.
