When my Daughter left for the island

The day my daughter left for "The Island" was one of the hardest days as a father of 5 that I could remember. I was watching my Daughter enter the Corps! She was a Barbie all girl but this was her choice, I supported her from the day she asked me to sign the forms although I had mixed emotions because I was so proud that she wanted to try to become a Marine but I was worried about what would happen if she failed. She had been going along in HS with many bumps and I feared the worse because she was getting into trouble and she never took school seriously. I prayed for her safety (as I still do daily and for all our Marines) and I sent her on her way.
"The call" at 5am was tough to take all 20 secs of it. I began to write her letters, hand written from the heart letters. I wrote her 1 letter every other day from the day we got her address. It was amazing as I look back at the letters she wrote. At first questioning her decision in the middle of August in the SC heat to knowing and accepting that she had made the right decision. As I look back almost 2 years later it was the proudest day of my Life the day she graduated and became a Marine. For any of the Parents who are saying goodbye to their kids all I can say is my Daughter left a girl and returned to me as a confident proud Marine. I love my daughter my "Barbie Marine". She should have full Corporal and get her blood stripes anyday now!
