2nd letter

Posted By: John Hamp 05-07-12

Our recruit left for boot on 16 April. We didn't hear from him until about a week and a half later. We were sweating bullets waiting to hear how he was. Then we got our first letter from him. Frankly I was a little shocked. He was quite distraught in his letter. He was not a happy camper to say the least. I didn't know what to think. I was very worried for him. But then we got his second letter. In it, he was much more settled and in control. He has a long way to go, but I can already see the progression process. I think he is going to be just fine.

The first few weeks are the hardest.... For the recruits as well as parents. My daughter left for BC on Nov 28th of last year. It was the same - about a week and a half for first letter. The first letter wasn't too bad from her but at the time she wrote it she had not met her drill instructor. The second letter came the very next day (after they were assigned to their DI) to say the least that letter was heart wrenching. The first line stated that "You can come pick her up at any point" and "what was I thinking". The very next letter was the most memorable to me. I opened the envelope and I unfolded the letter and written on the Marine Corps notepad stationary was "HELP" - that's it. In all CAPS, nothing else written...... All I could do was think that there must have been some sort of humor (or sarcasm) within that lonely word on the page. After that the letters got better and better. Yes, he will be fine just as mine was just fine. It's not an easy journey, that is why they are one of The Few and The Proud!
