Boyfriend off to Boot Camp!

Posted By: Lindsey Basham 02-08-12

My boyfriend arrived at Parris Island, SC, February 6, 2012, and he will be there until May. He wasn't supposed to leave until February 14, but someone in the area failed their pre-ship, and he was the next on the list to ship out. As a young girlfriend, I found it hard during the first couple of days the week in advance that we found out because the thought of him leaving was setting in, and I didn't have the time to prepare myself for it. However, he called me from the airport one last time Monday afternoon before he got on his second plane to SC to tell me how much he loved me and would miss me, and I found a tremendous amount of peace from that.

This is only the beginning of my man's journey as a Marine going through Parris Island and then SOI shortly after. I know this is going to be an uphill journey for us both, but I've quickly learned that there is nothing more powerful or greater than being proud of your Marine and what he's doing. For the other girlfriends, family members, and friends who have a Marine currently gone, put all your emotion and energy that has/would be spent worrying and missing your Marine into being proud of them instead. They are going to have a long road ahead, and I know from my boyfriend's point of view that they all could use the support and love.

Semper Fi! And God bless!

Hi Lindsey,

The same thing happened with me and my boyfriend. He left In January and its been tough but the mindset that you have is what I had to get to in a week once I finally realized that it was going to be a while before I saw him again but he did the same with me when he was at the airport and at the hotel so I felt better but its still tough. The more time that goes on, you have to really be strong for your Marine and yourself. Sometimes your fears may get the best of you but no worries :). Have you gotten a letter yet?

Keeva,
I received my first letter February 17, one on the 18, and two February 21. I'm doing good when it comes to missing him, but my worries are high. People say they come back a different person then as they left, but I don't think it will be something I won't like. I worry about him because he said he's already lost his voice and has 60-80 sand flea bites. I just want to get through all this, but I'm also very nervous for graduation and family day. I have so many emotions already. :(

Lindsey,

My worries are still high too. My fiance has gotten injured over 20 times and lost his voice also but he still remains positive which I love. If your boyfriend speaks positivity in his letters even though he going through so much, that is great!! Speak positivity back and tell him how strong you will be for him and tell him that you're going to have his back no matter what. My fiance loves my letters because no matter how much I worry about him, I don't show it in my letters and that shows him my true strength and how strong my love is for him. Trust me you have someone to talk to now because I know exactly how you feel. Good luck! :)

Keeva,

Thanks for your advice and support. I have received a letter every day since February 17, and he's doing great. He is ahead compared to some of the other recruits in his platoon because he already knows how to do a lot of what they are doing and has done it before (ROTC & the summer program he did last year). He has even been useful to his fellow brothers in his platoon because he's great with gear, and they come to him when something gets out of wack.

The only big complaint he has had is the sand fleas. I'm so proud of him and knowing that he's doing well and has everything going good makes my worries a lot lighter. He hasn't been injured or anything though. I really hope the best for you and your boyfriend and that things continue to get better for him as well; I can't imagine what they are going through.

I haven't been having too hard of a time, and this upcoming Monday marks the date of him being there for a month. I really am hoping the next two months fly by because I'm ready to chillax and do absolutely nothing with him for those ten days. He starts Phase II this week, so here we go.
