I can't believe some of the negative reactions we have gotten from friends and family. My son has had other options in life, this is what he wants to do. The decision was carefully thought out over a year's time. I am glad to see him off to Parris Island. I am a proud mom. I'm sending them someone special to turn into someone even more special, a Marine.

hi kim. the air force SMsgt told you correctly. the reactions are from ignorance and i think sometimes from people who think its is ok for my kids to do this but not there kids.. I got some of the same reaction you did from people who think that if you child chooses the military that they had no other options and were "to dumb" to go to collage. I have told people that my son is serving so that your child can study in peace. That usually gets the quiet stare... I am prior air force and my wife is prior army and our family is deep in military service, how dare they disrespect and/or devalue the service of those before us, those that were with us and those like your recruit who came after us, and those who will follow them..

Kim,
My father was an Army Ranger, I am a retired Air Force SMSgt, and my son is currently at Parris Island going through boot. One of the hardest things I have had to do in my life (prior to saying goodbye to my son when he left for boot), was being patient/tolerant of the ignorance of most people when it comes to the military. Anyone who gives you negative feedback is ignorant (not stupid - ignorant as in - lacking knowledge) about the military. I know it can hurt and anger you when you hear it, but what I learned to tell these people is "I do what I do, so that you don't have to." Meaning, you live in a free society where you have a choice, thanks to those before me, those with me, and those to follow. Many American's take this freedom for granted and don't realize the effort and sacrifice that Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Marines and Coasties go through to gain and retain the security they enjoy. But, that is why we do it.
Please tell your son that I said "Thank your for his choice to serve this great country." It is the most honorable choice a young man or woman can make and you are completly justified when you glow with pride (just like I am).
Like you said, your special young man is about to go through a process that will make him even more special. He will be a member of the greatest brotherhoon known to man --- The Marines! (And this is coming from a retired Air Force SMSgt....)
