My son just arrived at Parris Island Bootcamp Oct. 24

My son left for boot camp this morning. I am waiting on that first call home. I am nervous that I will not get it by morning . I am serving Jury duty at 9am tomorrow and do Not want to miss that call. Do most people get the call home in the first 24 hrs? This is obviously my oldest child and this is our first Marine experience. If anybody has good advice for a worried mom, I would love to hear it!

Hey Crystal. My (youngest of 4) son leaves November 28 for Parris Island. Meanwhile I've been doing some research on support groups (online and local) that can help the family and I while he is away. Have you joined the marine family network yet? Here is the group specifically relevant to your sons graduation date. Also there are groups on the site that are relevant to the state you live in:

MCRD Parris Island: January 20, 2012 - Charlie Company

Also for local support, see if there is a "moms of military" Chapter near where you live. I am going to be starting one with a few other moms here in Central Ohio.

Parents Guide:

Training Schedule so you can relate you letters to what he will be doing that week:

I hope some of this helps!

Glad to hear you got your phone call. I did receive my standard letter you could say on where to send his letters and information about his Drill Instructor. All it said was Mom at the top. And I cried at that. I was so very excited when I seen the small envelope in the mail with his writing on it. Well, were entering the 3rd week of camp and I'm hoping I receive a letter sometime this week. My son, Steve is also in 1st Batt, C Company and also graduates the 20th of Jan. Lets keep in touch. This is a great and helpfully website.

Thank you ! I did get that phone call at about 12:30 A.M. and it was both terrible and wonderful at the same time. He sounded so tired, but it was so good to hear his voice and to know that he had arrived. I am still waiting on a letter from him, but In know it will come. Issac, my son, is in 1st Batt. Charlie Co. and should graduate Jan. 20th, 2012. I can not wait!!!!!!

My son also left for boot camp on October 24th to Parris Island. I did receive my first call at 12:15 a.m. on October 25th. The 10 second call to say that he arrived safely. It was very difficult and I couldn't sleep for the rest of the night. I haven't really slept since he has left. I am very proud of him and this is what he worked so hard for. Now I'm waiting for the first letter. I do hope you did receive your call. This is also my first marine experience, but my youngest son.

My oldest son left for boot in August of 2009. Our first Marine experience also. We didn't get a call till the next morning and that was from his recruiter. For some reason he couldn't get a connection to our phone. After going through boot camp and one deployment to Afghanistan and another coming up I can give you one piece of advice that several Marine Moms gave to me....No news is good news! It's true. But the letters and phone calls are sure nice!
