When we went to Parris Island graduate from Boot Camp, we actually got to P.I. the day BEFORE Family Day.
My wife Sue had read somewhere that if you told the guard at the main gate that you wanted to "visit the museum," they would let you onto the base, knowing that you were hoping to spot your son or daughter.
I really didn't expect to see our new Marine, i just wanted to get an idea of the layout of the base so that we would know where we were supposed to be for Family Day.
Our son Nick was driving when all of a sudden he said "Hey, I can see some Marines marching over there." Turns out we had found the Parade Deck.
We found a place to park and figured we would watch for a minute, still with no expectation of seeing our daughter.
We were in for a surprise.
