My son shipped 8/01/11 MCRD San Diego. I have to say that saying goodbye to him at the airport was one of the hardest things I've ever done. I anticipated this day for months but when he turned to me and said "Mom its time," I looked at him and didn't see the almost 19 year old young man in front of me. I saw Sam going to his first day of school at about 5 years old. I saw determination and motivation in his eyes. I hugged him, told him that I was proud of him and that I'd be always here when he needed me. Just as I did when he was 5 years old.
I have since gotten my first real letter yesterday from Sam....it was better than Christmas getting that letter!! I sat outside on the ground and bawled like a baby. He tells me he's "having a good time"!!! He tells me he was squad leader for his PLT and has now been made guide. He sounds happy. How lucky am I to have been given the opportunity to raise such a great young man.
