My Only Son

Posted By: Joan East 01-23-11

My only son shipped out to Parris Island on Jan. 3rd. I miss him dearly. I did get a phone call from him, but I didn't get the chance to tell him I love him. I understand the reasoning, but it hurt. I have received 4 letters from him so far. He's adjusting quite well. I can't wait to see him on family day and graduation day and see the awesome Marine he has become. His letters keep me going. I have cried with every letter, but they're tears of pride. Semper Fi !

I too had my son leave on January 3, 2011 that went to San Diego, and he is my only child. I cried for days. I still can not get over that my baby is all grown up, and the first phone call for us was a recorded message of him pretty much saying, I am in San Diego, the next time you hear from me will be a letter (form letter) and I love you. I wish that I would of let it go to voicemail then at least I could listen to it again and again, my husband came home ten minutes later so he was not able to hear the message. My son graduates April 1st, and i will be easy to recognize as I will be crying like a big baby but bursting with pride. It is hard on all of us parents but it is our kids dreams to do this. Take care Joan, you are not alone!!!!!!

I know all to well the feeling after "the phone call". I was in shock. I didn't get a word in and believe you me, I am a talker. It has been a long 13 weeks. My son graduates from PI on Feb. 11th. We can not wait to see our new Marine. The longer they are there, the less time they seem to have to write. I tried to write at least every other day and sometimes every day. I wrote about everything and about nothing. The important thing was for him to have a letter at mail call. Do him a favor and do not send cards and stuff. One recruit got a musical card and had to open and close it while his platoon had to dance. My son told me not to send any thing that might draw attention to him. He had a phone call after rifle week for qualifying as an expert with his rifle. It was so good to hear his voice and hear the pride that he has in himself. Semper Fi! We soon to be Marine Moms are going to make it. Oooorah!

Take care of yourself Joan. Our son left Jan. 24, 2011. Miss him so much, it hurts. No call or letter. Too soon. We are all so proud of our children and they are beginning the rest of their lives with the training they are receiving. Stand tall and be proud.
