General James F Amos became the 35th Commandant of the Marine Corps, succeeding Gen James T Conway as the Corps’ highest ranking officer. The Passage of Commandants ceremony took place at Marine Barracks in Washington on October 22, 2010. Gen Amos is the first aviator to assume the role, and is now responsible for leading the United States Marine Corps. The new commandant’s personal decorations include the Navy Distinguished Service Medal, Legion of Merit with Gold Star, Defense Superior Service Medal, Bronze Star, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal.
In a brief speech following the ceremony, Gen Amos recognized the attendees and stated his goal for the future of the Marine Corps: “Thank you for being part of this historic event in the 235 years of rich history of our beloved Corps. Our nation still needs a force that is most ready when the nation is least ready and, ladies and gentlemen, that will be my focus as commandant for the next four years.”
