SSgt Daniel Gibbons

History in the USMC
Staff Sergeant Daniel R. Gibbons joined the Marine Corps in November 1999. Originally he served on active duty as an Avenger Technician and Instructor. After getting off active duty, he joined 2nd Battalion, 25th Marines and re-trained as a Machine Gunner. SSgt Gibbons then volunteered to deploy with Weapons Company, 1st Battalion, 25th Marines in 2006, in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Commendation
SSgt. Gibbons was awarded the Navy Achievement Medal with Combat distinguishing device for actions while serving as the section leader for Wpns Co., 1st Bn., 25th Mar. in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, 28 April, 2006. During a counter-ambush operation in Fallujah, his platoon came under fire. He ordered his Marines to wait until the insurgents fled to an area that was clear of civilians before firing upon the armed insurgents. Due to his level-headed leadership and ability to quickly respond to the situation, SSgt. Gibbons and his Marines avoided civilian casualties.
